But First, Coffee

Here you have it, my first ever graph! I wanted to keep things simple as I am new to tapestry crochet and all the color changes can be intimidating. And by intimidating, I mean that I don’t like to weave in a million ends, ha! What better way than to involve coffee? I don’t know about you, but for me coffee is an essential part of me being able to successfully raise 3 tiny humans.

I hope to move onto more complicated projects in the future using ALL the colors, but for now I’ll stay in my comfort zone. If you need a refresher or are just beginning to learn tapestry crochet, here are some helpful links to get you going. This design started off with intentions to make a wall tapestry, which I haven’t completely given up on, but this one in particular decided it wanted to be a tote bag! The written pattern below is for the graph, but in this post I will also include the back panel and straps for putting together your own bag. Finished tote measures 14’x19′. I have left the main portion of this graph in white, but you can absolutely use whatever colors you’d like. This was a great stash buster project for me! I used Stitch Fiddle to create this graph. Stitch Fiddle is a great FREE website where you can make graphs and charts for crochet, knit, and cross stitch! There are also tons of freely shared graphs on there for you to play with.

The back panel of this toe bag was made using the corner to corner method, but with a granny stitch! This was a lot of fun to learn and worked up very quickly. You can learn how to do it here at Repeat Crafter Me.

Gauge:

4’x4’= 16 rows of 14 sc

Materials:

• 497 m/544 yds of Caron One Pound in 3 colors of your choice, or any similar #4 medium weight yarn.
• 5 mm hook
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors

Notes:

Pattern/graph is worked from the bottom up, and in the normal alternating left to right direction. Colors are carried as you go and crocheted over. ch1 at the start of each row does NOT count as a stitch. Pattern is worked entirely in sc. Number of sc per color will be in ( ), ex. A(12).  Blocking after you’re finished is highly recommended before seaming your bag.

Colors:

A-white, B-brown, C-azure (For color A I used Caron one pound in persimmon, but for the pattern and graph I have left those stitches white) A small amount of white is also needed to create the steam from the coffee cup.

Fasten off and weave in all ends. Sc evenly around edges. For the coffee steam, you can stitch on with a tapestry needle, or you can use surface crochet (slip stitches along the face of your work). I used surface crochet and loved the way it came out. Blocking is optional, but very recommended.

You can alternate colors every two rows here and carry your yarn up the sides (I’m all about avoiding ends).

Straps (make 2)

Ch 2 does NOT count as a stitch. Leave long tails on both ends for attaching to the main part of the tote. 

Row 1: Ch 7, dc in the 3rd ch from hook, 4 dc, ch2, turn

Row 2- 34: 5dc, ch2, turn

Time to piece it all together! Line up your graph panel and granny panel and seam up 3 sides using a whip stitch. Fasten off. Position your straps towards the center of each panel, being careful not to twist the strap, and using the tail ends sew them onto the panels. I get extra paranoid so I sew back over twice for a good strong seam.
